Women generally have higher body fat percentages than men and don’t lose weight as quickly. That fact doesn’t have to be discouraging, but rather can be used as a motivator to work harder. Here are five weight loss tips designed especially for the way women’s bodies work.

1. Avoid Emotional Eating
Food has always been a source of comfort for many women. Every woman should ask themselves why they are eating before the start of each snack or meal. Some women eat because other people are eating, or because it feels good to eat candy or comfort food. Examining the reason you are eating will encourage you to eat for the right reasons and avoid emotional eating.

2. Make Exercise Social
Women are often very busy, especially if they work full-time and have children. Making time to exercise is important, and it doesn’t have to be difficult. A family walk or bike ride after dinner is a great way to bond and talk about the day while everyone gets some exercise. Joining an exercise class is great for some women because they spend time with friends while exercising and it becomes something to look forward to, rather than a chore.

3. Don’t Shop Hungry
Grocery shopping is an outing that is often squeezed into other activities of a busy day. Women who want to lose weight should make sure that they eat before going shopping because shopping while they are hungry makes most women more likely to buy convenience foods that are unhealthy. Making a meal plan and shopping with a list is a great way to avoid unhealthy impulse buys. It’s also a good idea for moms to shop without their kids because being stressed in the store causes most moms to give in to their children’s unhealthy food choices.

4. Visit Your Doctor
Weight gain isn’t only caused by overeating or lack of exercise. Some women gain weight because of an underlying medical condition or hormonal imbalance. Women who want to lose weight should talk to their medical providers about healthy ways to lose weight and be tested for disorders that may be causing weight gain. Some medications can also increase hunger or decrease metabolism. Doctors can often put their patients on alternative medications that don’t carry these side effects.

5. Don’t Starve Yourself
In their desire to be thin, women sometimes go overboard and don’t eat enough food. The body needs a certain amount of vitamins and calories to function properly, and everyone’s body is different. Talking to a doctor can help each woman come up with a number of calories to eat each day that will help them lose weight without starving or depriving their body of necessary nourishment.

Women often become discouraged when trying to lose weight and give up quickly. It may take a month of exercising and eating a healthy diet before some women see a drop in the scale’s number. Sticking to healthy habits is often difficult in the beginning, but staying the course usually leads to long term weight loss.
